Book Synopsis Soul Repair by : Rita Nakashima Brock

Book excerpt: The first book to explore the idea and effect of moral injury on veterans, their families, and their communities Although veterans make up only 7 percent of the U.S. population, they account for an alarming 20 percent of all suicides. And though treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder has undoubtedly alleviated suffering and allowed many service members returning from combat to transition to civilian life, the suicide rate for veterans under thirty has been increasing. Research by Veterans Administration health professionals and veterans’ own experiences now suggest an ancient but unaddressed wound of war may be a factor: moral injury. This deep-seated sense of transgression includes feelings of shame, grief, meaninglessness, and remorse from having violated core moral beliefs. Rita Nakashima Brock and Gabriella Lettini, who both grew up in families deeply affected by war, have been working closely with vets on what moral injury looks like, how vets cope with it, and what can be done to heal the damage inflicted on soldiers’ consciences. In Soul Repair, the authors tell the stories of four veterans of wars from Vietnam to our current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan—Camillo “Mac” Bica, Herman Keizer Jr., Pamela Lightsey, and Camilo Mejía—who reveal their experiences of moral injury from war and how they have learned to live with it. Brock and Lettini also explore its effect on families and communities, and the community processes that have gradually helped soldiers with their moral injuries. Soul Repair will help veterans, their families, members of their communities, and clergy understand the impact of war on the consciences of healthy people, support the recovery of moral conscience in society, and restore veterans to civilian life. When a society sends people off to war, it must accept responsibility for returning them home to peace.

Do you wonder if God is really for you? if God really loves you? Deep down many of us believe that we are not good enough, and never will be good enough, to have a meaningful relationship with God. This is because we have been spiritually trained in ways that have left us with distorted and inadequate spiritualities of four different kinds: abusive anorexic addictive codependent And we are left with a toxic combination of fear and shame. We may try to get it right. We may try to control ourselves and others. We may try to please God and to earn God's love. After a while we find ourselves exhausted and discouraged, and we may feel even more alienated from God. Jeff VanVonderen, Dale Ryan and Juanita Ryan understand this problem because they have been there both personally and professionally. And they are prepared to help you rebuild your spiritual life. If you find yourself living out a burdensome and unfulfilling spirituality, this book is for you. If you are longing to have a relationship with God that works, this book can show you the way.

Book Synopsis Soul Custody by : Stephen W. Smith

Download or read book Soul Custody written by Stephen W. Smith. This book was released on 2012-11-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, inner and outer violence ravages the soul, leaving us weak, fearful, and malnourished. In Soul Custody, Stephen W. Smith presents eight choices to help readers reclaim custody of their one and only life—choices about silence, community, vocation, honoring the body, finding one’s true self, and more. As Smith reminds readers, allowing God to shape the soul leads to the deep, full, and satisfying life that God had in mind all along. This is not a self-help book. It is not a book of easy steps to a happy life. It is an invitation to the life God dreams for each of His children. It is a call to start living—to let the soul wake up to life as God intended.

Book Synopsis The Soul Care Birthright by : C. Guy Robinson

Download or read book The Soul Care Birthright written by C. Guy Robinson. This book was released on 2024-06-24. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the postmodern world confronts a mental health crisis, therapy services providers and advocates are rising to the challenge, providing treatment, raising awareness, and reducing the stigma around seeking help. Their important contributions, however, need the collaborative leadership of the church because the crisis is not just psychological but psychospiritual. The church exists to minister in this psychospiritual leadership capacity, but, in an increasingly secular age, how can the church serve at the intersection of faith and behavioral science without compromising its orthodoxy and institutional identity? The Soul Care Birthright outlines how church leaders can reclaim their role as healers, applying insights from evidence-based psychology while embracing a theology of mental health that acknowledges the teachings of Jesus Christ. Drawing upon his background in mental health education and theological studies, Dr. C. Guy Robinson reveals a path to reconciling both disciplines in a way that best serves those who so desperately need soul care.
