Book excerpt: The United States has long recognized that the nation's prosperity and security depend on how we address challenges of disasters, poverty, famine, and disease around the world. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has played a vital role in promoting U.S. national and international interests by advancing strategies for employing science, technology, and innovation to respond to global challenges. The focus by USAID on science, technology, and innovation is critical to improve development outcomes. At the core of this progress is the engagement of science institutions and other innovative enterprises and their commitment to work in partnership with USAID to research, test, and scale solutions. The Role of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships in the Future of USAID provides an assessment and advice on the current and future role for science, technology, and innovation in assistance programs at USAID and on the role of partnerships in the public and private sectors to expand impact. This report examines challenges and opportunities for USAID in expanding the utilization of science, technology, and innovation in development assistance; assesses how USAID has deployed science, technology, and innovation; and recommends priority areas for improvement going forward in partnership with others.

Book Synopsis The Role of Science Popularization in Science, Technology & Innovation Policy by : Akram Ghadimi

Download or read book The Role of Science Popularization in Science, Technology & Innovation Policy written by Akram Ghadimi. This book was released on 2021-01-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popularisation of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) is a process of communicating and appropriating scientific and technological knowledge among broad sectors of the population. This process, however, must contribute to an effective integration of a number of historical, cultural, political, social and economic situations; and make such knowledge a central component of the culture of social awareness and collective intelligence. The possibilities of gaining access to information are changing our vision while transforming the relationship between human beings, and the appropriation and dissemination of knowledge. Today, access to STI related knowledge is synonymous with development, well-being and improving quality of life. In this context, S&T literacy is a social and ethical right of all human beings. But developing countries face formidable challenges in increasing the capacity to store, retrieve and transmit S&T information. For this reason, the areas to be reached by STI must be broadened to integrate formal education and communication with informal efforts; while also making scientific and technological knowledge available to the ordinary citizen. This book includes 14 papers contributed by researchers, scientists, experts and professionals from 9 different developing countries namely Bhutan, Cuba, India, Iran, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Togo and Zimbabwe. And each paper gives significant insight into various policies and strategies that are being adopted or need to be adopted by the developing countries to ensure effective communication and popularisation of scientific knowledge.

Book excerpt: Citizen science, the active participation of the public in scientific research projects, is a rapidly expanding field in open science and open innovation. It provides an integrated model of public knowledge production and engagement with science. As a growing worldwide phenomenon, it is invigorated by evolving new technologies that connect people easily and effectively with the scientific community. Catalysed by citizens’ wishes to be actively involved in scientific processes, as a result of recent societal trends, it also offers contributions to the rise in tertiary education. In addition, citizen science provides a valuable tool for citizens to play a more active role in sustainable development. This book identifies and explains the role of citizen science within innovation in science and society, and as a vibrant and productive science-policy interface. The scope of this volume is global, geared towards identifying solutions and lessons to be applied across science, practice and policy. The chapters consider the role of citizen science in the context of the wider agenda of open science and open innovation, and discuss progress towards responsible research and innovation, two of the most critical aspects of science today.
