Book Synopsis Scars of War by : Sabrina Thomas

Download or read book Scars of War written by Sabrina Thomas. This book was released on 2021-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best First Book Award from the History Honor Society, Phi Alpha Theta Scars of War examines the decisions of U.S. policymakers denying the Amerasians of Vietnam--the biracial sons and daughters of American fathers and Vietnamese mothers born during the Vietnam War--American citizenship. Focusing on the implications of the 1982 Amerasian Immigration Act and the 1987 Amerasian Homecoming Act, Sabrina Thomas investigates why policymakers deemed a population unfit for American citizenship, despite the fact that they had American fathers. Thomas argues that the exclusion of citizenship was a component of bigger issues confronting the Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations: international relationships in a Cold War era, America's defeat in the Vietnam War, and a history in the United States of racially restrictive immigration and citizenship policies against mixed-race persons and people of Asian descent. Now more politically relevant than ever, Scars of War explores ideas of race, nation, and gender in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Thomas exposes the contradictory approach of policymakers unable to reconcile Amerasian biracialism with the U.S. Code. As they created an inclusionary discourse deeming Amerasians worthy of American action, guidance, and humanitarian aid, federal policymakers simultaneously initiated exclusionary policies that designated these people unfit for American citizenship.

Book Synopsis Industrial Scars by : J. Henry Fair

Download or read book Industrial Scars written by J. Henry Fair. This book was released on 2019. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The images in 'Industrial Scars' and the narrative that accompanies them tell the story of the impact of the consumer life-style on the natural systems that support life on the planet. These photographs, mostly aerial and taken at locations around the world, are masterworks of composition and colour, made with a nod to the great abstract painters of modern art. This book is the result of countless hours of research and careful planning by New York photographer J. Henry Fair, who travels to the locations and charters a small plane to photograph areas usually fenced off from prying eyes so he can get a true view of our real footprint. This is a new edition.

Book Synopsis Necessary Scars by : Philip Berry

Download or read book Necessary Scars written by Philip Berry. This book was released on 2021-12-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you are a doctor, nurse, student, or otherwise interested reader, the stories here will help you to understand how medicine works and how medical error can happen. The lifelong process of learning that is a medical career requires healthcare workers to find a way to live through these setbacks without either becoming too adept at putting them 'down to experience' and forgetting their social significance, or 'burning out' and leaving medicine. The stories and discussions here present detailed narratives, analyses, and reflections on medical errors through actions, omissions, and misunderstandings. They offer a uniquely honest perspective on the social implications of medical error and will enable healthcare workers at all levels to analyse and learn from it without losing sight of its impact.
