Book Synopsis The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón by : Claudio Lomnitz-Adler

Download or read book The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón written by Claudio Lomnitz-Adler. This book was released on 2014-03-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tale, never before told, of anarchy, cooperation, and betrayal at the margins of the Mexican revolution. In this long-awaited book, Claudio Lomnitz tells a groundbreaking story about the experiences and ideology of American and Mexican revolutionary collaborators of the Mexican anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón. Drawing on extensive research in Mexico and the United States, Lomnitz explores the rich, complicated, and virtually unknown lives of Flores Magón and his comrades devoted to the “Mexican Cause.” This anthropological history of anarchy, cooperation, and betrayal seeks to capture the experience of dedicated militants who themselves struggled to understand their role and place at the margins of the Mexican Revolution. For them, the revolution was untranslatable, a pure but deaf subversion: La revolución es la revolución—“The Revolution is the Revolution.” For Lomnitz, the experiences of Flores Magón and his comrades reveal the meaning of this phrase. The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón tracks the lives of John Kenneth Turner, Ethel Duffy, Elizabeth Trowbridge, Ricardo Flores Magón, Lázaro Gutiérrez de Lara, and others, to illuminate the reciprocal relationship between personal and collective ideology and action. It is an epic and tragic tale, never before told, about camaraderie and disillusionment in the first transnational grassroots political movement to span the U.S.-Mexican border. The Return of Comrade Ricardo Flores Magón will change not only how we think about the Mexican Revolution but also how we understand revolutionary action and passion.

Book Synopsis Ricardo’s Dream by : Nat Dyer

Download or read book Ricardo’s Dream written by Nat Dyer. This book was released on 2024-11-26. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the workings of financial markets to our response to the ecological crisis, economic theory shapes the world. But where do these ideas come from? Ricardo’s Dream tells the fascinating story of David Ricardo, Adam Smith’s only real rival as the ‘founder of economics’: The wealthiest stock trader of his day, Ricardo introduced the study of abstract models to economics. He also developed the theory of trade that underpinned globalization and hides, behind its mathematical façade, a history of power, empire and slavery. Brimming with fresh ideas and stories, Ricardo’s Dream shows how too many economists, from Ricardo’s day to our own, have turned away from observing the real world and led us astray.

Book Synopsis Ricardo's Gauntlet by : Vishaal Kishore

Download or read book Ricardo's Gauntlet written by Vishaal Kishore. This book was released on 2014-09-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Ricardo’s Gauntlet’ advances a critique of the mainstream economic case for international free trade. While the core of the case for free trade is David Ricardo’s principle of comparative advantage, the book argues that this case relies on a cluster of interconnected and mutually enforcing ‘economic fictions’ – economic theories or doctrines that pretend to be fact but which upon examination turn out to be mirages. Exposing the layers of fictions nested in the subfields of mainstream economies empties comparative advantage of its persuasiveness, bringing down the case for free trade. This book is not, however, confined to dealing with esoteric puzzles within economic theory. Rather, it takes a social theoretical perspective and grapples with comparative advantage and its associated economic fictions as ideas that ground an argument with social currency, social validity and social effects. While ‘Ricardo’s Gauntlet’ engages in economic debates, it does so with the purpose of demonstrating the fragility of mainstream economic ideology and the flaw at the heart of its justification of free trade. Proposing a novel disaggregation of the case for free trade into its component fictions – and drawing on and uniting heterodox and radical strands including social theory and political philosophy – ‘Ricardo’s Gauntlet’ reveals that the case for free trade fails precisely on its own terms. This failure unnecessarily and dangerously limits our understanding of what is right and wrong, with high sociopolitical stakes.
