Book Synopsis The Physics of Quantum Fields by : Michael Stone

Download or read book The Physics of Quantum Fields written by Michael Stone. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gentle introduction to the physics of quantized fields and many-body physics. Based on courses taught at the University of Illinois, it concentrates on the basic conceptual issues that many students find difficult, and emphasizes the physical and visualizable aspects of the subject. While the text is intended for students with a wide range of interests, many of the examples are drawn from condensed matter physics because of the tangible character of such systems. The first part of the book uses the Hamiltonian operator language of traditional quantum mechanics to treat simple field theories and related topics, while the Feynman path integral is introduced in the second half where it is seen as indispensable for understanding the connection between renormalization and critical as well as non-perturbative phenomena.

Book Synopsis Quantum Field Theory and Critical Phenomena by : Jean Zinn-Justin

Download or read book Quantum Field Theory and Critical Phenomena written by Jean Zinn-Justin. This book was released on 1993. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes particle physics and critical phenomena in statistical mechanics in a unified framework, incorporating graduate lecture notes from the 1970s and 1980s at several universities in Europe and the US. Deals with general field theory, functional integrals, and functional methods; renormalization properties of theories with symmetries and specific applications to particle physics; lattice gauge theories and asymptotic freedom in four dimensions; and the role of instantons and the application of instanton calculus to the large-order behavior of perturbation theory and the problem of summation of the perturbative expansion. Several chapters close with exercise, solutions or hints for which are provided. No dates are noted for the previous editions. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis Developments in Quantum Physics by : Frank H. Columbus

Download or read book Developments in Quantum Physics written by Frank H. Columbus. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forefront of contemporary advances in physics lies in the submicroscopic regime, whether it be in atomic, nuclear, condensed-matter, plasma, or particle physics, or in quantum optics, or even in the study of stellar structure. All are based upon quantum theory (i.e., quantum mechanics and quantum field theory) and relativity, which together form the theoretical foundations of modern physics. Many physical quantities whose classical counterparts vary continuously over a range of possible values are in quantum theory constrained to have discontinuous, or discrete, values. The intrinsically deterministic character of classical physics is replaced in quantum theory by intrinsic uncertainty. According to quantum theory, electromagnetic radiation does not always consist of continuous waves; instead, it must be viewed under some circumstances as a collection of particle-like photons, the energy and momentum of each being directly proportional to its frequency (or inversely proportional to its wavelength, the photons still possessing some wavelike characteristics).

Book Synopsis Quantum Field Theory with Application to Quantum Nonlinear Optics by : Anatoli? Karolevich Prikarpatski?

Download or read book Quantum Field Theory with Application to Quantum Nonlinear Optics written by Anatoli? Karolevich Prikarpatski?. This book was released on 2002. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-photon excitation states of poly-atomic molecules undergoing a self-interaction via Kerr effect related processes are of great interest today. Their successful study must be both analytical and by means of modern quantum field theoretical tools. This book deals with these and related topics by developing modern quantum field theory methods for the analysis of radiative states in a nonlinear quantum-optical system. These lecture notes are ideally suited to graduate mathematical physics and physics students, but can also be of interest to mathematicians involved in applied physics problems, and physicists and chemists studying phenomena related with modern quantum-optical devices.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information by : Peter Lambropoulos

Download or read book Fundamentals of Quantum Optics and Quantum Information written by Peter Lambropoulos. This book was released on 2007-01-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the two closely related subjects of quantum optics and quantum information. The book gives a simple, self-contained introduction to both subjects, while illustrating the physical principles of quantum information processing using quantum optical systems. To make the book accessible to those with backgrounds other than physics, the authors also include a brief review of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, some aspects of quantum information, for example those pertaining to recent experiments on cavity QED and quantum dots, are described here for the first time in book form.
