It is customary for the publishers of city Directories to give an estimate of the population of the city based on the number of individual names contained in the book. The Government have this year taken the census of the Dominion, and although the population of Ottawa has not been made public at the time of our going to press we have no doubt it will come very close to our estimate. Our Ottawa Directory for 1891 contained 15,126 individual names and the Government census that year gave Ottawa a population of 44,154. The present volume contains 24,093 individual names, exclusive of the names of firms, corporations, etc., an increase of 1,243 names in the year, being the largest increase in any one year since 1893. Allowing the same ratio of names to population as we had in 1891 we estimate the present population of Ottawa to be 70,271.
