Book Synopsis Mammary Gland Development by : Finian Martin

Download or read book Mammary Gland Development written by Finian Martin. This book was released on 2016-10-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides key molecular biological protocols and experimental strategies currently employed to study the various stages of mammary gland development. Chapters are divided into four parts covering genetically modified mouse models that exhibit prenatal and pubertal mammary gland phenotypes, 2D and 3D-model culture systems, methodologies for mammary stem cell isolation, and translational applications that provide a bridge between experimental studies of mammary gland development and the study of human breast cancer. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Mammary Gland Development: Methods and Protocols will be useful for researchers whose primary interest is in mammary gland development; developmental biologists, epithelial cell biologists, and those with an interest in molecular mechanisms underlying breast cancer.

Book Synopsis Mammary Stem Cells by : Maria del Mar Vivanco

Download or read book Mammary Stem Cells written by Maria del Mar Vivanco. This book was released on 2015-06-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The identification of normal and breast cancer stem cells has offered a new vision of this heterogeneous disease and new hopes for its prognosis and treatment. This volume provides an overview of recent developments in mammary stem cell research and discusses the many varieties of approaches used by researchers to investigate the properties and functions of mammary stem cells. The beginning chapters provide readers with an introduction to mammary stem cells, and the processes used to characterize stem cells and isolate them via fluorescent activated cell sorting. The next few chapters discuss DNA and mRNA sequencing, proteomic techniques to help profile cells, lentiviral cell transduction for gene expression, and in vivo lineage tracing. The final few chapters are dedicated to following stem cells from their initial niche to the new microenvironment at their metastasis site, and to studying these cells using physical and mathematical approaches. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, the chapters include the kind of detailed description and implementation advice that is crucial for getting optimal results in the laboratory. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Mammary Stem Cells: Methods and Protocols aims to help members of the scientific community explore the behavior of stem cells and how to work with them in order to guide the design of new and complimentary strategies to be applied in the clinic with the ultimate end goal of fighting breast cancer.

Book Synopsis Biology of the Mammary Gland by : John A. Mol

Download or read book Biology of the Mammary Gland written by John A. Mol. This book was released on 2000-08-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST 825) Symposium on Mammary Gland Biology, held September 16-18, 1999, in Tours, France. It is difficult to overstate the evolutionary and functional significance of mammary tissue in biology. Substantial progress has been made by researchers in various disciplines, particularly over the last fifteen years, towards realizing the potential of this tissue to yield powerful experimental models for morphogenesis and tissue development; for cellular differentiation; for the biosynthesis and secretion of proteins, lipids, small molecules and inorganic salts; and for the coordination and regulation of these processes. More recently, the possibility of exploiting the secretory epithelial cells of mammary tissue as `cell factories' has become a reality and the recombinant production by lactating animals of an increasing number of proteins, valuable both in the pharmaceutical and `nutraceutical' fields, is in progress or under development. Also in this sphere of agricultural production, genetic as well as nutritional technologies are under investigation and exploitation to optimize milk composition for various end-uses - for instance in food process and manufacture. The possibilities of deriving health benefit from the bioactive properties of some of the minor constituents of milk are emerging to counter the highly-publicized negative health impact of excessive consumption of saturated animal fats. In human nutrition and medicine, the mammary gland is both a source of nutrition to the neonate and a potential health threat to the adult female - breast cancer remains the major single cause of female mortality in most developed countries. This volume provides a unique glimpse into our understanding, at the cutting edge of a variety of disciplines, of this versatile and extraordinary tissue, at the birth of the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Mammary Glands by : Edmund B. Rucker

Download or read book Mammary Glands written by Edmund B. Rucker. This book was released on 2014. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of manuscripts that encompass a breadth of information from different species including rodents, dogs, cows, goats, and sheep. Normal developmental processes are covered and anatomical features are discussed, as well as the impact and significance of environmental chemicals and epigenetics on the mammary gland. In terms of disease states, cancer and mastitis are the most impactful in the fields of human medicine and livestock management, respectively, in the context of mammary gland biology. Therefore, this book presents in depth analyses of these diseases over several chapters and different model systems. Rodent and canine cancer models are discussed, which are very relevant in understanding the roles that genes and the environment play in human breast cancer. In the livestock industry, mastitis in the dairy sector has a deep economic impact globally, and results in over a billion dollar loss annually. Several chapters are devoted towards this disease in dairy cattle, sheep and goats, with an underlying theme of generating newer detection strategies to detect infections at an earlier stage. An up-to-date description of the most important signaling pathways and mechanisms that impact both development and disease are included. A gamut of sub-disciplines are found throughout the book that covers the main aspects of anatomy, physiology, cell biology, genetics, and molecular biology in both development and diseases of the mammary gland.
