Book excerpt: Don’t miss syndicated radio host and author Mark Levin's #1 New York Times acclaimed and longtime bestselling manifesto for the conservative movement. When nationally syndicated radio host Mark R. Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny appeared in the early months of the Obama presidency, Americans responded by making his clarion call for a new era in conservatism a #1 New York Times bestseller for an astounding twelve weeks. As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, with his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers reflected on every page, Levin’s galvanizing narrative provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society. In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for reinforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. In a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the tyrannical liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming to immigration, and more.

Book Synopsis Liberty, Democracy, and the Temptations to Tyranny in the Dialogues of Plato by : Charlotte C. S. Thomas

Download or read book Liberty, Democracy, and the Temptations to Tyranny in the Dialogues of Plato written by Charlotte C. S. Thomas. This book was released on 2021-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the 2019 A.V. Elliott Conference on Great Books and Ideas at Mercer University, eleven scholars take up some of the complex questions that emerge when one considers carefully how Plato presents democracy and liberty in the dialogues, particularly in terms of the threats they seem to pose to justice and philosophy. When Athens lost the Peloponnesian War, the Athenian people also lost their democratic constitution for a brief but brutal time. Plato wrote his dialogues and founded his Academy in the early days of Athens's newly restored democratic regime, the regime that executed Socrates. But, he set most of the dialogues in the days leading up to Athens's downfall. Plato presents Socrates as so deeply committed to Athens that he would not consider living anywhere else, even when the Athenians intend to execute him. The authors whose essays are collected in this volume explore these tensions deeply and with great attention to the subtleties and complexities of Plato's texts.

Book excerpt: As government gets bigger and more intrusive, it carries the seeds of its own destruction: central banking, unsound money, and debt -- or in a word, Keynesianism. Technology, meanwhile, powered by the inexorable law of accelerating returns, is bringing to people wonders from the pages of science fiction. It is technology and the free market, not government, that will eradicate poverty, provide cheap, clean energy, and cure killer diseases, while freeing people for a longer, healthier, and more creative life.
