Book excerpt: The purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate Latino youths' academic achievement prior to, during, and after the transition from middle school to high school. This study also examined the manner in which gender and neighborhood quality influenced youths' academic achievement over time. Several hypotheses were tested. Official school transcripts and census tract data were obtained for 92 youth. Three latent growth curve models were tested, one for each stage of development (i.e., middle school, transition to high school, high school). Results indicated that youth were stable in academic achievement throughout middle school, declined in grades upon transitioning into high school, yet remained stable in high school. Results also indicated that females held higher levels of academic achievement across each stage in development. Although youth displayed an overall stable trajectory throughout high school, there was a significant difference between male and female trajectories, with females declining and males increasing in achievement. Neighborhood quality was not a significant predictor.
