I am really unable to see why this should be so...' Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal (1907) inspired the classic Ealing film Kind Hearts and Coronets. But though both works are comedies about a serial murderer, they are different creatures. The eponymous narrator of Roy Horniman's novel, son of a Jewish commercial traveller, offers his memoirs from the condemned cell , having murdered six people who stood between him and an earldom he hoped to inherit. Through Israel's story Horniman explores and parodies the anti-Semitic attitudes of Edwardian England. 'A superb thriller, but also a disturbing study in human nature. The narrative pace never slackens, thanks to the spareness and elegance of Horniman's prose... it is a book of its time, quite faithful to it, and (despite its 400 pages) over all too quickly.' Simon Heffer, in his Preface

Download or read book Israel Rank written by Roy Horniman. This book was released on 2014-04-16. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1907 Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal is perhaps best known as the inspiration for the classic Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, which was voted the seventh greatest British film of all time by readers of Total Film magazine in 2004. It has often been suggested that Israel Rank is an anti-Semitic novel but this is untrue. What Horniman does is to use his characters and the novel's plot as a vehicle to explore and parody the anti-Semitism that was rife in Edwardian England. While part of the success of the novel is due to the film's cult status Israel Rank remains a classic comedic novel that explores the antithesis of conventional morality - in short it is a comedy about a serial killer.

Book excerpt: "Like an antique revolver, Horniman's murderous comedy is precision tooled, elegant, and must be handled with care" - Patrick Kincaid, author of The Continuity Girl To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of Ealing Studio's sublime comedy classic Kind Hearts and Coronets, D'Ascoyne Press are republishing the novel that originally inspired the film. Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal is a 1907 darkly comic novel written by Roy Horniman, telling the tale of the eponymous anti-hero's campaign to cut back his family tree and inherit the aristocratic title enjoyed by one of his hated relatives. Told from his condemned cell, the story charts - in surprisingly lurid detail - how Rank goes from the status of a dismissed poor relation, to advancing through life by diligently killing off the six relatives standing in the way of him succeeding to his family seat. Set against a backdrop of Edwardian snobbery, upper-class ritual and casual antisemitism, Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal is darker than the film it went on to inspire. It is also a fast-paced, engaging, and beautifully-rendered thriller - both disturbing and funny in equal measure.

Book Synopsis The Biography of Ancient Israel by : Ilana Pardes

Download or read book The Biography of Ancient Israel written by Ilana Pardes. This book was released on 2000-04-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation--particularly in Exodus and Numbers--is not an abstract concept but rather a grand character whose history is fleshed out with remarkable literary power. In her innovative exploration of national imagination in the Bible, Pardes highlights the textual manifestations of the metaphor, the many anthropomorphisms by which a collective character named "Israel" springs to life. She explores the representation of communal motives, hidden desires, collective anxieties, the drama and suspense embedded in each phase of the nation's life: from birth in exile, to suckling in the wilderness, to a long process of maturation that has no definite end. In the Bible, Pardes suggests, history and literature go hand in hand more explicitly than in modern historiography, which is why the Bible serves as a paradigmatic case for examining the narrative base of national constructions. Pardes calls for a consideration of the Bible's penetrating renditions of national ambivalence. She reads the rebellious conduct of the nation against the grain, probing the murmurings of the people, foregrounding their critique of the official line. The Bible does not provide a homogeneous account of nation formation, according to Pardes, but rather reveals points of tension between different perceptions of the nation's history and destiny. This fresh and beautifully rendered portrayal of the history of ancient Israel will be of vital interest to anyone interested in the Bible, in the interrelations of literature and history, in nationhood, in feminist thought, and in psychoanalysis.
