Download or read book Grasping God's Word (Enhanced Edition) written by J. Scott Duvall. This book was released on 2012-09-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENHANCED EDITION—Just as a rock climber’s handhold enables him to master the mountain, a firm grasp on God’s Word empowers us to traverse the challenging, risky slopes of life. Grasping God’s Word helps college students, beginning seminary students, and other serious readers get a grip on the solid rock of Scripture—how to read it, how to interpret it, and how to apply it. Filling the gap between approaches that are too simple and others that are too technical, this book starts by equipping readers with general principles of interpretation, then moves on to apply those principles to specific genres and contexts. Features include: • VIDEOS: Section introductions by authors and master teachers J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays • VIDEOS: Concluding reflections on the end result of studying God's Word • Proven utility in classrooms across the country • Hands-on exercises to guide students through the interpretation process • Emphasis on real-life application • Supplemented by a website for professors providing extensive teaching materials • Accompanying workbook (sold separately) This third edition includes updated illustrations, appendices, bibliography, and assignments, and has been rearranged for clarity. In order to emphasize the redemptive narrative arc of the Bible and provide greater canonical correlation, the authors have modified the steps of the Interpretive Journey to include a fifth step throughout the book: 1. Grasp the text in their town. What did the text mean to the biblical audience? 2. Measure the width of the river to cross. What are the differences between the biblical audience and us? 3. Cross the principlizing bridge. What is the theological principle in this text? 4. Cross into the rest of Scripture. Does the rest of the canon’s teaching modify or qualify this principle? 5. Grasp the text in our town. How should Christians today apply the theological principle in their lives? Grasping God’s Word progresses through the following five sections: 1. How to Read the Book—Basic Tools; 2. Contexts—Now and Then; 3. Meaning and Application; 4. The Interpretive Journey—New Testament; 5. The Interpretive Journey—Old Testament.

Living God's Word surveys the entire Bible through broad themes that trace the progression of God's redemptive plan, focusing on how each portion of Scripture fits into the overarching narrative. Once you see the Bible as a Great Story, you'll begin to see how your own life fits into what God has done and is doing in the world. Each section of Living God's Word deals with a section of Scripture and includes: Reading and listening preparation An explanation A summary Observations about theological significance Connections to the Great Story Written assignments for further study Living God's Word is ideal for introductory college courses, adult Sunday school classes, small groups, or anyone who wants to understand how their life fits into the story of the Bible, enabling them to live faithfully in deep and important ways.

Book Synopsis “Too Much to Grasp” by : Andrea D. Saner

Download or read book “Too Much to Grasp” written by Andrea D. Saner. This book was released on 2015-09-08. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few phrases in Scripture have occasioned as much discussion as has the “I am who I am” of Exodus 3:14. What does this phrase mean? How does it relate to the divine name, YHWH? Is it an answer to Moses’ question (v. 13), or an evasion of an answer? The trend in late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century scholarly interpretations of this verse was to superimpose later Christian interpretations, which built on Greek and Latin translations, on the Hebrew text. According to such views, the text presents an etymology of the divine name that suggests God’s active presence with Israel or what God will accomplish for Israel; the text does not address the nature or being of God. However, this trend presents challenges to theological interpretation, which seeks to consider critically the value pre-modern Christian readings have for faithful appropriations of Scripture today. In “Too Much to Grasp”: Exodus 3:13?15 and the Reality of God, Andrea Saner argues for an alternative way forward for twenty-first century readings of the passage, using Augustine of Hippo as representative of the misunderstood interpretive tradition. Read within the literary contexts of the received form of the book of Exodus and the Pentateuch as a whole, the literal sense of Exodus 3:13–15 addresses both who God is as well as God’s action. The “I am who I am” of v. 14a expresses indefiniteness; while God reveals himself as YHWH and offers this name for the Israelites to call upon him, God is not exhausted by this revelation but rather remains beyond human comprehension and control.

Book Synopsis The Strategic Grasp Of The Bible by : J. Sidlow Baxter

Download or read book The Strategic Grasp Of The Bible written by J. Sidlow Baxter. This book was released on 2017-01-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the compass of this substantial volume, a major study work, Dr. J. Sidlow Baxter points out the marvel of the structural design of the Scriptures. First examining the “architecture” of the Bible, he suggests the basic approach to, and expectation of what is to be gained by the study of Scriptures. He then makes clear how a certain fitness for delineating the spiritual truths of the Bible may be acquired - and so he leads the reader to understand the structure of the Bible as a whole. In the second part of his book, Dr. Baxter points to the two dispensations defined in John 1:17 and offers stimulating comparisons between the Old and New Testaments. Further chapters lead toward a clear understanding of the Kingdom of Heaven, the Church, and the entire New Testament. Included in the text are useful outlines and tables to summarize key factors, figures, pronouncements and turning points which have pivotal or crucial significance in the total message of the Bible.
