Book Synopsis Extrinsic Geometric Flows by : Bennett Chow

Download or read book Extrinsic Geometric Flows written by Bennett Chow. This book was released on 2020-05-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrinsic geometric flows are characterized by a submanifold evolving in an ambient space with velocity determined by its extrinsic curvature. The goal of this book is to give an extensive introduction to a few of the most prominent extrinsic flows, namely, the curve shortening flow, the mean curvature flow, the Gauß curvature flow, the inverse-mean curvature flow, and fully nonlinear flows of mean curvature and inverse-mean curvature type. The authors highlight techniques and behaviors that frequently arise in the study of these (and other) flows. To illustrate the broad applicability of the techniques developed, they also consider general classes of fully nonlinear curvature flows. The book is written at the level of a graduate student who has had a basic course in differential geometry and has some familiarity with partial differential equations. It is intended also to be useful as a reference for specialists. In general, the authors provide detailed proofs, although for some more specialized results they may only present the main ideas; in such cases, they provide references for complete proofs. A brief survey of additional topics, with extensive references, can be found in the notes and commentary at the end of each chapter.

Book Synopsis The Ricci Flow in Riemannian Geometry by : Ben Andrews

Download or read book The Ricci Flow in Riemannian Geometry written by Ben Andrews. This book was released on 2011. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Hamilton's Ricci flow, beginning with a detailed discussion of the required aspects of differential geometry, progressing through existence and regularity theory, compactness theorems for Riemannian manifolds, and Perelman's noncollapsing results, and culminating in a detailed analysis of the evolution of curvature, where recent breakthroughs of Böhm and Wilking and Brendle and Schoen have led to a proof of the differentiable 1/4-pinching sphere theorem.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Geometry of Stochastic Flows by : Fabrice Baudoin

Download or read book An Introduction to the Geometry of Stochastic Flows written by Fabrice Baudoin. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a self-contained introduction to the local geometry of the stochastic flows associated with stochastic differential equations. It stresses the view that the local geometry of any stochastic flow is determined very precisely and explicitly by a universal formula referred to as the Chen-Strichartz formula. The natural geometry associated with the Chen-Strichartz formula is the sub-Riemannian geometry whose main tools are introduced throughout the text. By using the connection between stochastic flows and partial differential equations, we apply this point of view of the study of hypoelliptic operators written in Hormander's form.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Geometry and Topology of Fluid Flows by : Renzo L. Ricca

Download or read book An Introduction to the Geometry and Topology of Fluid Flows written by Renzo L. Ricca. This book was released on 2012-12-06. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading experts present a unique, invaluable introduction to the study of the geometry and typology of fluid flows. From basic motions on curves and surfaces to the recent developments in knots and links, the reader is gradually led to explore the fascinating world of geometric and topological fluid mechanics. Geodesics and chaotic orbits, magnetic knots and vortex links, continual flows and singularities become alive with more than 160 figures and examples. In the opening article, H. K. Moffatt sets the pace, proposing eight outstanding problems for the 21st century. The book goes on to provide concepts and techniques for tackling these and many other interesting open problems.

Book excerpt: The 2019 'Australian-German Workshop on Differential Geometry in the Large' represented an extraordinary cross section of topics across differential geometry, geometric analysis and differential topology. The two-week programme featured talks from prominent keynote speakers from across the globe, treating geometric evolution equations, structures on manifolds, non-negative curvature and Alexandrov geometry, and topics in differential topology. A joy to the expert and novice alike, this proceedings volume touches on topics as diverse as Ricci and mean curvature flow, geometric invariant theory, Alexandrov spaces, almost formality, prescribed Ricci curvature, and Kähler and Sasaki geometry.
