On January 4, 1861, he received the following dispatch: "Washington, January 4, 1861. Maj. L. G. Arnold, commanding Fort Independence, Boston Harbor. Hold your command in readiness to embark for the South, and conditionally engage steam transportation. Another telegram to-morrow. Winfield Scott, Headquarters of the Army." On the next day he received the following telegram: "Washington, January 5, 1861. Maj. L. G. Arnold, commanding Fort Independence, Boston Harbor.
