Book excerpt: Hans Frei (1922-1988) was perhaps the leading Anselmian theologian of his generation. His influence is extensive in contemporary theology, and his work marks the beginning of a decisive shift in biblical interpretation. Reading Faithfully, which is the first of two volumes, is a special collection that includes a wide range of his letters, lectures, book reviews and other items, many of them not previously available in print. Analytical and perceptive, Frei's writings expands his arguments about the meaning and truth of scriptural narrative, distinguishing his ideas from other forms of narrative or story theology as well as exploring the kinds of political theology consistent with his typological imagination. Alongside Volume II, this is an invaluable resource that provides new insights into the nature and implications of Frei's work. It is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the development of religious thought and understanding.

Book Synopsis Faithfully Yours by : Jo Ann Ferguson

Download or read book Faithfully Yours written by Jo Ann Ferguson. This book was released on 2015-04-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith Cromwell has a secret. A secret she must keep from everyone in her family, especially her father, who is the most outspoken loyalist in the countryside west of Philadelphia, as the Revolutionary War bursts through the area in late 1777. She is helping the Colonial army by making socks and gloves for them. It is a small thing, but she knows it helps, for the army has few supplies. Her father welcomes Major Sebastian Kendrick to use their house as his headquarters in preparation for an attack on the Continental Congress in York. Major Kendrick is the son of an earl, and Faith fears he will be as pompous and rude as the other peers who have paraded through their home, drinking her father’s best ale and trying to fondle his oldest daughter. He is different because he has secrets of his own. He is determined to bring honor to his family and gain his father’s respect. Both of them are suspicious of each other, but it is impossible to ignore the desire that sizzles between them. Then a diversion is needed, and Faith’s contact suggests she marry the major so a captured man can be freed while everyone’s attention is elsewhere. That decision almost ends in tragedy because they need to decide what is more important—being enemies or being faithfully yours.

Book Synopsis One Faith, Many Faithful by : William J. Byron

Download or read book One Faith, Many Faithful written by William J. Byron. This book was released on 2012. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Care. Finance reform. The future of Catholic schools. Caring for the elderly. Abortion. Abuse scandals in the church. Business management, the economy, and the very welfare of our society. Confronted with a storm of issues, all of which call for their attention and concern, contemporary Catholics often find themselves confused and uncertain, and even at odds with each other, when trying to apply their faith to the realities of the world they live in. One Faith, Many Faithful provides numerous essays or "short takes" that tackle the wide range of matters of concern to Catholics, but does so in a spirit of complete faithfulness to Catholic teaching and tradition. The collection is divided into four parts: "Religion and Ethics," "Business and Politics," "Education and Family" and "People and Ideas." William J. Byron, SJ, applies and explains principles of Catholic social teaching throughout the book, which offers the reader clarity and concise exposition of the issues that are troubling the contemporary Catholic mind. This book is for all Catholics who want to move beyond the limited scope of contemporary debates and actually apply the ancient principles of their faith to difficult issues. Book jacket.
