Book excerpt: "Gérôme was one of the most famous artists of his day, yet throughout his career he was the object of polemical debate and harsh criticism. Long stigmatized as the embodiment of sterile academicism, he is now considered to be one of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century. Gérôme's interest in Antiquity, his theatrical approach to history painting, and his complex relationships with the Orient and with the new medium of photography all contributed to his highly inventive imagery. Acquired by American collectors at an early date, Gérôme's oeuvre fired the new world's historical imagination and even inspired its favorite medium, the movies. This catalogue traces Gérôme's unique career and features his major works--from history paintings to polychrome sculptures--thereby casting the nineteenth century in a new light."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Manet by : Diana Seave Greenwald

Download or read book Manet written by Diana Seave Greenwald. This book was released on 2024-10-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and richly illustrated account of the importance of Manet’s family to his art All families are complicated, but the family of Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was more complicated than most. The artist married a piano teacher who worked for his wealthy parents. Her son, born out of wedlock, may have been Édouard’s, his father’s, or another man’s. For all its complexities, Manet’s family fueled his creativity. They were his most frequent models, and supported him emotionally and financially. Manet: A Model Family is an innovative new exploration of the largely neglected story of the importance of Manet’s family to his art. Presenting new research on works in which Manet depicted family members, Manet: A Model Family shows how an understanding of the artist’s family sheds crucial light on his artistic career. Manet’s mother, wife, stepson, and other relatives—including his sister-in-law, the painter Berthe Morisot—are given long overdue recognition for their roles in Manet’s life and work. Leading scholars present technical and archival analysis, including redating Madame Auguste Manet, an important, newly conserved painting of Manet’s mother. In an essay inspired by that canvas, Pulitzer Prize–winning critic Hilton Als reconsiders Manet’s formative relationship with his mother and his bourgeois Parisian roots. With its original account of Manet’s domestic relationships and personal life, Manet: A Model Family humanizes the artist and his contributions to the birth of modernism. Book Synopsis French Rococo Ébénisterie in the J. Paul Getty Museum by : Gillian Wilson

Download or read book French Rococo Ébénisterie in the J. Paul Getty Museum written by Gillian Wilson. This book was released on 2021-03-30. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive catalogue of the Getty Museum’s significant collection of French Rococo ébénisterie furniture. This catalogue focuses on French ébénisterie furniture in the Rococo style dating from 1735 to 1760. These splendid objects directly reflect the tastes of the Museum’s founder, J. Paul Getty, who started collecting in this area in 1938 and continued until his death in 1976. The Museum’s collection is particularly rich in examples created by the most talented cabinet masters then active in Paris, including Bernard van Risenburgh II (after 1696–ca. 1766), Jacques Dubois (1694–1763), and Jean-François Oeben (1721–1763). Working for members of the French royal family and aristocracy, these craftsmen excelled at producing veneered and marquetried pieces of furniture (tables, cabinets, and chests of drawers) fashionable for their lavish surfaces, refined gilt-bronze mounts, and elaborate design. These objects were renowned throughout Europe at a time when Paris was considered the capital of good taste. The entry on each work comprises both a curatorial section, with description and commentary, and a conservation report, with construction diagrams. An introduction by Anne-Lise Desmas traces the collection’s acquisition history, and two technical essays by Arlen Heginbotham present methodologies and findings on the analysis of gilt-bronze mounts and lacquer. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/rococo/ and includes zoomable, high-resolution photography. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book, and JPG downloads of the main catalogue images.
