Book Synopsis Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ by : Antonio Ramírez de Verger

Download or read book Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ written by Antonio Ramírez de Verger. This book was released on 2021-05-10. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verse-by-verse commentary on the Ovidian text includes the reading of more than 300 manuscripts, including the so-called Heinsian manuscripts, and of almost 100 editions, from the two "editiones principes" of 1471 to the present day. The introduction describes the manuscripts used, and a history of the Ovidian editions is also traced. A new text of book VI is presented, accompanied by a slim and lucid critical apparatus. Futher information appears in the commentary and in the appendices, particularly readings of manuscripts and editions. The verbatim commentary offers, with reliable quotes for each term, the critical observations of all the editors and commentators of the Ovidian work throughout the centuries. This aspect of critical edition has been neglected by commentators of Ovid since Heinsius (1659) and Burman (1727). Two appendices ("Readings of manuscripts" and "Readings of editions") are added for the first time for readers of the Ovidian work. The volume closes with a "Select index of textual problems", a large "Index locorum" and an "Index nominum".

Download or read book A Commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses: Volume 2, Books 7-12 written by Alessandro Barchiesi. This book was released on 2023-12-31. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising fifteen books and over two hundred and fifty myths, Ovid's Metamorphoses is one of the longest extant Latin poems from the ancient world and one of the most influential works in Western culture. It is an epic on desire and transgression that became a gateway to the entire world of pagan mythology and visual imagination. This, the first complete commentary in English, covers all aspects of the text – from textual interpretation to poetics, imagination, and ideology – and will be useful as a teaching aid and an orientation for those who are interested in the text and its reception. Historically, the poem's audience includes readers interested in opera and ballet, psychology and sexuality, myth and painting, feminism and posthumanism, vegetarianism and metempsychosis (to name just a few outside the area of Classical Studies).

Book Synopsis A Commentary on Ovid, Tristia by : Jennifer Ingleheart

Download or read book A Commentary on Ovid, Tristia written by Jennifer Ingleheart. This book was released on 2010-10-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major work of Latin literature, Tristia 2 is a verse letter addressed by the exiled poet Ovid to the man who banished him from Rome, the emperor Augustus. Ovid apologizes to Augustus for the misdemeanours that led to his banishment, but, more importantly, defends both his life and his poetry in light of the accusation that his earlier Ars amatoria (The Art of Love) had promoted adultery. Jennifer Ingleheart's commentary, the most up-to-date and comprehensive oneavailable, is an invaluable guide to all aspects of the poem - textual, literary, historical, and political - while her Introduction explores, among other topics, its ironical and subversive aspects.

Book Synopsis Ovid, Fasti 1 by : Steven J. Green

Download or read book Ovid, Fasti 1 written by Steven J. Green. This book was released on 2004. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary provides a detailed analysis of the first book of Ovid's Fasti, a complex poem which takes as its central framework the Roman calendar in the late Augustan/early Tiberian period and purports to deal with its religious festivals and their origins. Book I covers the month of January, and has proven to be particularly challenging to readers in light of the apparent revision/reworking of the text undertaken by the poet whilst in exile. This commentary - the most extensive yet on any single book of the poem - locates the text of Book I firmly in its literary, historical, and socio-political contexts and seeks both to incorporate and build on the recent scholarship on the poem. In light of the special nature of Book I, the commentary is prefaced by two introductory sections, the second of which tackles head-on the problems (and dynamics) of post-exilic reworking of the text.
