Download or read book Wanted - Donald Morrison written by Clarke Wallace. This book was released on 1999-12. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tall and bronzed by a western sun and wind, Donald Morrison was no one’s fool and he liked it that way. He was a gun-slinging hero back in the 1880’s who honed his skill as a cowboy riding the Chisholm and Shawnee Trails. But his life changes when he is summoned home to the Eastern Townships of Quebec, just up from Vermont. His family was in danger of losing the precious homestead, and they knew Donald was the one to set it right. In trying to wrest back the farm, Donald is drawn into a series of turns that ultimately lead to a dramatic western-style gunfight in the sleepy town of Megantic. He is forced to shoot first to save his own life, an act of self-defense, which becomes a charge of murder. This is the true story of one young man's fight against greed perpetuated by the moneylenders. Against those in high places who took advantage of immigrants coming to a new land to find peace, but finding only anguish and hardship. WANTED is a remarkable story of courage, of love, greed and betrayal, of fiery passions and a man willing to face life on its own terms.

Download or read book The Hunted Outlaw, or, Donald Morrison, the Canadian Rob Roy written by Anonymous. This book was released on 2019-12-23. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Morrison was famous as a Canadian outlaw, convicted of manslaughter, who became a folk hero. His father, a Scottish immigrant in Canada, was cheated out of his farm by rich landowners who used the old man's illiteracy. When Donald, who was working as a cowboy far from home at the time of the deal, returned home, he got infuriated. Donald hired a lawyer to get a farm back but never succeeded. He then burned a barn and was accused of a felony, so he had to escape from the police. He hid from law enforcement for ten months until he got caught and shot. Since he was shooting in self-defense, he killed one of his persecutors and was additionally charged with manslaughter. While on the run, Morrison earned the sympathy of the Canadian people, who often helped him to hide and supported him. Thus, the outlaw became a folk hero, inspiring numerous authors and filmmakers to reflect on his story.

Book excerpt: Relying heavily upon oral tradition, the book embraces the diverse disciplines of folklore, history, language, geography, literature, sociology, agriculture, botany, and home economics. It covers emigration history, community and domestic lifestyles, religious and social structure (including songs, poems, legends, and folktales), customs and beliefs, and material culture. Discussions are supported throughout by testimonies of many Townshippers, quoted verbatim, enabling the "voice" of the Gael to continue to be heard. Oatmeal and the Catechism will be of great interest to scholars and students of Gaelic studies and folklore in addition to Quebecers and others whose Scottish ancestors settled in Quebec and eastern Canada and helped carve a country out of the wilderness.
