Book Synopsis Interpreting Basic Statistics by : Zealure C. Holcomb

Download or read book Interpreting Basic Statistics written by Zealure C. Holcomb. This book was released on 2017-08-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Basic Statistics gives students valuable practice in interpreting statistical reporting as it actually appears in peer-reviewed journals. New to the eighth edition: A broader array of basic statistical concepts is covered, especially to better reflect the New Statistics. Journal excerpts have been updated to reflect current styles in statistical reporting. A stronger emphasis on data visualizations has been added. The statistical exercises have been re-organized into units to facilitate ease of use and understanding. About this book Each of the 64 exercises gives a brief excerpt of statistical reporting from a published research article, and begins with guidelines for interpreting the statistics in the excerpt. The questions on the excerpts promote learning by requiring students to interpret information in tables and figures, perform simple calculations to further their interpretations, critique data-reporting techniques, and evaluate procedures used to collect data. Each exercise covers a limited number of statistics, making it easy to coordinate the exercises with lectures and a main textbook. The questions in each exercise are divided into two parts: (1) Factual Questions and (2) Questions for Discussion. The factual questions require careful reading for details, while the discussion questions show that interpreting statistics is more than a mathematical exercise. These questions require students to apply good judgment as well as statistical reasoning in arriving at appropriate interpretations.

Book Synopsis Basic Statistics with R by : Stephen C. Loftus

Download or read book Basic Statistics with R written by Stephen C. Loftus. This book was released on 2021-02-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Statistics with R: Reaching Decisions with Data provides an understanding of the processes at work in using data for results. Sections cover data collection and discuss exploratory analyses, including visual graphs, numerical summaries, and relationships between variables - basic probability, and statistical inference - including hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. All topics are taught using real-data drawn from various fields, including economics, biology, political science and sports. Using this wide variety of motivating examples allows students to directly connect and make statistics essential to their field of interest, rather than seeing it as a separate and ancillary knowledge area. In addition to introducing students to statistical topics using real data, the book provides a gentle introduction to coding, having the students use the statistical language and software R. Students learn to load data, calculate summary statistics, create graphs and do statistical inference using R with either Windows or Macintosh machines. Features real-data to give students an engaging practice to connect with their areas of interest Evolves from basic problems that can be worked by hand to the elementary use of opensource R software Offers a direct, clear approach highlighted by useful visuals and examples

Book Synopsis Understanding Statistics and Experimental Design by : Michael H. Herzog

Download or read book Understanding Statistics and Experimental Design written by Michael H. Herzog. This book was released on 2019-08-13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access textbook provides the background needed to correctly use, interpret and understand statistics and statistical data in diverse settings. Part I makes key concepts in statistics readily clear. Parts I and II give an overview of the most common tests (t-test, ANOVA, correlations) and work out their statistical principles. Part III provides insight into meta-statistics (statistics of statistics) and demonstrates why experiments often do not replicate. Finally, the textbook shows how complex statistics can be avoided by using clever experimental design. Both non-scientists and students in Biology, Biomedicine and Engineering will benefit from the book by learning the statistical basis of scientific claims and by discovering ways to evaluate the quality of scientific reports in academic journals and news outlets.
