Book Synopsis Time-resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy Applied to the Investigation of Magnetic Materials and Photonic Structures by : Hynek Nĕmec

Download or read book Time-resolved Terahertz Spectroscopy Applied to the Investigation of Magnetic Materials and Photonic Structures written by Hynek Nĕmec. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two distinct branches of optics are combined in this work: Time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, and photonic structures. The works at first provides a survey of tools utilized for exploration of the terahertz region, and it en riches them by a method for simultaneous determination of dielectric and magnetic response of materials and metamaterials. Photonic structures operating in the terahertz range form the subject of the rest of this thesis. A periodically modulated dielectric waveguide is studied theoretically using a modal method: ThE band structure of guided and leaky modes is calculated and resonant modes are described. One-dimensional photonic crystals with a defect are then investigated in detail. Formation of defect modes is analyzed theoretically in a photonic crystal with a twinning defect. The analysis makes it possible to formulate requirements on a design of a structure with defect modes tunable by external parameters. Following these guidelines, we have successfully designed, fabricated and characterized photonic crystals with thermally tunable defect modes with relative tunability reaching 60 %.

Book Synopsis Enhanced Polarisation Control and Extreme Electric Fields by : Connor Devyn William Mosley

Download or read book Enhanced Polarisation Control and Extreme Electric Fields written by Connor Devyn William Mosley. This book was released on 2021-03-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports advances in terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, relating to the development of new techniques and components that enhance the experimentalist’s control over the terahertz polarisation state produced by photoconductive emitters. It describes how utilising the dynamic magnetoelectric response at THz frequencies, in the form of electromagnons, can probe material properties at a transition between two magnetically ordered phases. Additionally, preliminary investigations into the properties of materials exposed to extreme terahertz optical electric fields are reported. The work presented in this thesis may have immediate impacts on the study of anisotropic media at THz frequencies, with photoconductive emitters and detectors being the most commonly used components for commercially available terahertz spectroscopy and imaging systems, and by providing a new way to study the nature of magnetic phase transitions in multiferroics. In the longer term the increased understanding of multiferroics yielded by ultrafast spectroscopic methods, including terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, may help develop new magnetoelectric and multiferroic materials for applications such as spintronics.

Book Synopsis Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy of Low-Dimensional Materials and Photonic Structures by : Chen Xia

Download or read book Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy of Low-Dimensional Materials and Photonic Structures written by Chen Xia. This book was released on 2013. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz), the frequency region that bridges the gap between the radio and optical frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum, is of both scientific and technological importance. Its broad applications, however, have been limited by the availability of bright sources and sensitive detectors. The invention of modelocked femtosecond lasers has made possible the generation and detection of electromagnetic transients on the picosecond to sub-picosecond time scale, which correspond to broadband coherent radiation up to a few or 10{u2019}s THz. This time-domain technique has had a significant impact on spectroscopy, imaging and sensing. While detectors and emitters have been the main interest in the development of THz technology, other components such as modulators, reflectors and filters are also of importance. In Chapter 2 we apply THz transmission spectroscopy to characterize polymeric materials and nano-composites. We demonstrate the design and fabrication of THz mirrors based on one-dimensional photonic crystals consisting thermoplastic polymers and BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Stop bands have been achieved in the THz region, and the results agree well with the prediction of the transfer matrix method. The main focus of this thesis is to study charge transport and carrier dynamics in low dimensional materials using THz time-domain spectroscopy. In contrast to conventional transport measurements, where electrical contacts are required, the THz method based on freely propagating electromagnetic transients can probe the electronic transport in a contactless fashion. In Chapter 3 we investigate highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using the THz emission spectroscopy. The direction, spectrum, polarization and dynamics of the emitted THz radiation from graphite upon ultrafast photoexcitation reveal the emission mechanism as well as the out-of-plane transport properties of graphite. In Chapter 4 metal phthalocyanines have been investigated by the optical pump/THz probe technique. Disc-like phthalocyanine molecules self-assemble into columns and form quasi-1D conduction channels for efficient charge transport. With appropriate side groups the material can have both crystalline and liquid crystalline phases. The photoconductivity spectrum, its dependence on the pump-probe delay time and sample temperature suggest the mechanism of as well as the influence of crystallinity on the photoconductivity in metal phthalocyanines.

Download or read book Terahertz Spectroscopy written by Susan L. Dexheimer. This book was released on 2017-12-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new sources and methods in the terahertz spectral range has generated intense interest in terahertz spectroscopy and its application in an array of fields. Presenting state-of-the-art terahertz spectroscopic techniques, Terahertz Spectroscopy: Principles and Applications focuses on time-domain methods based on femtosecond laser sources and important recent applications in physics, materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine. The first section of the book examines instrumentation and methods for terahertz spectroscopy. It provides a comprehensive treatment of time-domain terahertz spectroscopic measurements, including methods for the generation and detection of terahertz radiation, methods for determining optical constants from time-domain measurements, and the use of femtosecond time-resolved techniques. The last two sections explore a variety of applications of terahertz spectroscopy in physics, materials science, chemistry, and biomedicine. With chapters contributed by leading experts in academia, industry, and research, this volume thoroughly discusses methods and applications, setting it apart from other recent books in this emerging terahertz field.
