Book Synopsis Sunk Without Trace by : Paul Gelder

Download or read book Sunk Without Trace written by Paul Gelder. This book was released on 2010-05-15. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total Loss has been on the Adlard Coles list for 23 years, and in March this year we published a new edition in B format with a 'thriller' look. In two months it has sold 886 copies. There was a lot of unused material left over from it, plus some new total loss stories of yachts sunk, which have happened since the book went to press. I'd like to get the author working on a follow-up volume asap (he's a journalist and takes ages to deliver - deadlines etc). We'd repeat the formula: thriller look, low-priced impulse buy.

Book Synopsis Shipwrecked in Paradise by : Paul F. Johnston

Download or read book Shipwrecked in Paradise written by Paul F. Johnston. This book was released on 2015-09-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2016 Secretary's Research Award, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution - awarded for author's contributions to research The first oceangoing yacht ever built in America, Cleopatra’s Barge, endured many incarnations over her eight-year life, from Mediterranean pleasure cruiser to a Hawaiian king’s personal yacht. The famed ship, at times also a Christian missionary transport, pirate ship, getaway vehicle, instrument of diplomacy, and racing yacht, wrecked on a reef in Hanalei Bay on April 6, 1824. Obtaining the first underwater archaeological permits ever issued by the state of Hawai‘i, a team of divers from the Smithsonian Institution located, surveyed, and excavated the wrecked ship from 1995 to 2000. The 1,250 lots of artifacts from the shipwreck represent the only known material culture from the reign of King Kamehameha II (Liholiho), shedding light on the little-documented transitional period from Old Hawai‘i to foreign influence and culture. Although Liholiho ruled Hawai‘i for only a few short years, his abolition of taboos and admission of the Boston Christian missionaries into his kingdom planted the seeds for profound changes in Hawaiian culture. Richly illustrated, Shipwrecked in Paradise tells the story of the ship’s life in Hawai‘i, from her 1820 sale to Liholiho to her discovery and excavation.

Book Synopsis Shipwrecks, Monsters, and Mysteries of the Great Lakes by : Ed Butts

Download or read book Shipwrecks, Monsters, and Mysteries of the Great Lakes written by Ed Butts. This book was released on 2011-01-11. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1679, a French ship called the Griffon left Green Bay on Lake Michigan, bound for Niagara with a cargo of furs. Neither the Griffon nor the five-man crew was ever seen again. Though the Griffon’s fate remains a mystery, its disappearance was probably the result of the first shipwreck on a Great Lake. Since then, more than six thousand vessels, large and small, have met tragic ends on the Great Lakes. For many years, saltwater mariners scoffed at the freshwater sailors of the Great Lakes, “puddles” compared to the vast oceans. But those who actually worked on the Great Lakes ships knew differently. Shoals and reefs, uncharted rocks, and sandbars could snare a ship or rip open a hull. Unpredictable winds could capsize a vessel at any moment. A ship caught in a storm had much less room to maneuver than did one at sea. The wreckage of ships and the bones of the people who sail them litter the bottoms of the five lakes: Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior. Ed Butts has gathered stories and lake lore in this fascinating, frightening volume. For anyone living on the shores of the Great Lakes, these tales will inspire a new interest and respect for their storied past.
