Book excerpt: This publication contains technical instructions relating to the provisions of Annex 18 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation on the safe transport of dangerous goods by air. These international standards have been established to control the international transport of dangerous goods by air, and these standards are required to be introduced into national legislation. They are intended to facilitate transport while providing a level of safety such that dangerous goods can be carried without placing an aircraft or its occupants at risk, providing all the requirements are fulfilled. This system seeks to ensure there is governmental control over the carriage of dangerous goods by air and gives worldwide harmonisation of safety standards.
