Book Synopsis When Stars Are Scattered by : Victoria Jamieson

Download or read book When Stars Are Scattered written by Victoria Jamieson. This book was released on 2020-04-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Award Finalist, this remarkable graphic novel is about growing up in a refugee camp, as told by a former Somali refugee to the Newbery Honor-winning creator of Roller Girl. Omar and his younger brother, Hassan, have spent most of their lives in Dadaab, a refugee camp in Kenya. Life is hard there: never enough food, achingly dull, and without access to the medical care Omar knows his nonverbal brother needs. So when Omar has the opportunity to go to school, he knows it might be a chance to change their future . . . but it would also mean leaving his brother, the only family member he has left, every day. Heartbreak, hope, and gentle humor exist together in this graphic novel about a childhood spent waiting, and a young man who is able to create a sense of family and home in the most difficult of settings. It's an intimate, important, unforgettable look at the day-to-day life of a refugee, as told to New York Times Bestselling author/artist Victoria Jamieson by Omar Mohamed, the Somali man who lived the story.

Book Synopsis City Scattered by : Tyler Mills

Download or read book City Scattered written by Tyler Mills. This book was released on 2022-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goblets of gin, fans of feathers, war-bombed bricks, loaves of bread, soot, smoke, and paper money--such are the tangible things that touched the lives of women who worked as wage laborers during an era of Europe of cabaret and hyperinflation. The crises of modernity and capital, as well as the human experiences of women and who loved, lost, and fought against the structures of privilege that all the while aided them during a fraught stretch of time between wars, come alive in City Scattered, a chapbook of poems that invite us to experience and examine the conditions of labor that echo those of our current day. Poetry. Chapbook.

Book Synopsis Scattered Musics by : Martha I. Chew Sánchez

Download or read book Scattered Musics written by Martha I. Chew Sánchez. This book was released on 2021-03-19. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Nilanjana Bhattacharjya, Benjamin Burkhart, Ivy Chevers, Martha I. Chew Sánchez, Athena Elafros, William García-Medina, Sara Goek, David Henderson, Eyvind Kang, Junko Oba, Juan David Rubio Restrepo, and Gareth Dylan Smith In Scattered Musics, editors Martha I. Chew Sánchez and David Henderson, along with a range of authors from a variety of scholarly backgrounds, consider the musics that diaspora and migrant populations are inspired to create, how musics and musicians travel, and how they change in transit. The authors cover a lot of ground: cumbia in Mexico, música sertaneja in Japan, hip-hop in Canada, Irish music in the US and the UK, reggae and dancehall in Germany, and more. Diasporic groups transform the musical expressions of their home countries as well as those in their host communities. The studies collected here show how these transformations are ways of grappling with ever-changing patterns of movement. Different diasporas hold their homelands in different regards. Some communities try to re-create home away from home in musical performances, while others use music to critique and redefine their senses of home. Through music, people seek to reconstruct and refine collective memory and a collective sense of place. The essays in this volume—by sociologists, historians, ethnomusicologists, and others—explore these questions in ways that are theoretically sophisticated yet readable, making evident the complexities of musical and social phenomena in diaspora and migrant populations. As the opening paragraph of the introduction to the volume observes, “What remains when people have been scattered apart is a strong urge to gather together, to collect.” At few times in our lives has that ever been more apparent than right now.

Book excerpt: Chief inspector Mushtaq Hussain is posted to a police station in Patparganj - a small hill station nestling in the Western Ghats. While idly leafing through the old case files at the station, he comes across one that had caused a sensation of sorts when he used to be a student-boarder at the Palace School, Patparganj. Though the file is marked 'Closed' many questions remain unanswered Susan, whose memories stir feelings in Mushtaq's heart, had been found, late at night, lying unconscious beside Altaf, their classmate, in a clearing in the bush around the Palace school estate. What was the duo doing there at that time? Susan had been badly mauled and angry scratch marks had appeared all over the skin exposed due to torn clothing. Who had attacked Susan and why? Altaf had his head bludgeoned with blood flowing through a gaping wound near his neck. Who had struck Altaf? Gonu, the mentally challenged school mascot, had stood at the crime scene with a bloodied hockey stick in his hand. Why? How did he get there? Miss Stokes, Gonu's mother and the first one to witness the tableau, had come across Gonu struggling with a person, who, when confronted by Miss Stokes, had fled away into the thicket before she could have a closer look at his face. Who was the fourth person? Mushtaq decides to investigate. He sets the stage for the dramatis personae of that night to come together once again hoping to reignite the passions that could throw up some answers.
