Book excerpt: Women and resistance in Iran; cowboy songs; fetal alcohol syndrome; the conquest of Everest; women settlers in Natal. What do these topics have in common? The study of what used to be called Commonwealth literature, or the new literatures, has by now come to be known as postcolonial study. This collection of essays investigates the status of postcolonial studies today. The contributors come from three generations: the pioneers who introduced study of the “new” literatures into university English departments, the next generation who refined and developed many of the theoretical positions embodied in postcolonial study, and the next, much younger, generation, who use the established practices of the discipline to investigate the application of this theory in a wide range of cultural contexts. Although the authors write from such different starting points, a surprisingly similar set of images, phrases and topics of concern emerge in their essays. They return constantly to issues of difference and similarity, the re-examination of categories that often appear to be too rigidly defined in current postcolonial practices, and to concepts of sharing: experience, ideas of home, and even the use of land. Postcolonizing the Commonwealth: Studies in Literature and Culture offers an intriguing analysis of the state of postcolonial criticism today and of the application of postcolonial methods to a variety of texts and historical events. It is an invaluable contribution to the current debate in both literary and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Sarah ANYANG AGBOR’S text is a conceptual, historical and functional examination of Commonwealth Literature. The text comes across as a nice way to review some of the essential conceptual and historical development of Commonwealth literature. This text will be of special interest for students in Commonwealth studies. The work responds to two ways of looking at Commonwealth literature. The fi rst is a conceptual defi nition, historical development and diversifi cation of Commnwealth Literature. The other is to investigate through sociological criticism the various ways Commonwealth Literature dissents . This comparative analysis which is not limited to authors and regions but extends to the erstwhile and the contemporary, offers invaluable insights into the longstanding debates surrounding the concept of Commonwealth Literature in particular and draws conclusions that do not pretend to close the debate but rather articulate the discursive nature of Commonwealth Literature and the ambivalence of its ‘defi - ning’ parameters. Book Synopsis Is Canada Postcolonial? by : Laura Moss

Download or read book Is Canada Postcolonial? written by Laura Moss. This book was released on 2009-08-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can postcolonialism be applied to Canadian literature? In all that has been written about postcolonialism, surprisingly little has specifically addressed the position of Canada, Canadian literature, or Canadian culture. Postcolonialism is a theory that has gained credence throughout the world; it is be productive to ask if and how we, as Canadians, participate in postcolonial debates. It is also vital to examine the ways in which Canada and Canadian culture fit into global discussions as our culture reflects how we interact with our neighbours, allies, and adversaries. This collection wrestles with the problems of situating Canadian literature in the ongoing debates about culture, identity, and globalization, and of applying the slippery term of postcolonialism to Canadian literature. The topics range in focus from discussions of specific literary works to general theoretical contemplations. The twenty-three articles in this collection grapple with the recurrent issues of postcolonialism — including hybridity, collaboration, marginality, power, resistance, and historical revisionism — from the vantage point of those working within Canada as writers and critics. While some seek to confirm the legitimacy of including Canadian literature in the discussions of postcolonialism, others challenge this very notion.
