Book Synopsis Method and Mechanism of Colloidal Assembly for Surface Patterning by : Sayantan Das

Download or read book Method and Mechanism of Colloidal Assembly for Surface Patterning written by Sayantan Das. This book was released on 2015. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the field of self-assembly of colloids, there are a number of unanswered questions; can creation of surface patterns be merely achieved by the design of the process? What is the mechanism behind the formation of spontaneous surface patterns? In addition, how to control these patterns? These questions were answered in this work. In particular, we study the self-assembly of nanoparticles into monolayers as a means to build hierarchical structures that will exhibit new functionality. The techniques utilized include convective self-assembly and DOD inkjet printers. For uniform and controlled colloidal monolayers with reduced defects, we present a study on different solvent compositions and use of external modifiers such as vibration and surface coatings during the self-assembly process. These monolayers can be used in colloidal lithography, to prepare high quality metallic nanostructures. Moreover, the live view of particles during self-assembly and modelling of capillary interaction between the colloids, helps to unravel the mechanism behind colloidal phase segregation. This work has produced novel surface patterning using simple scalable methods, which can be used for various applications. One of the promising applications includes use of phase segregated stripe pattern array of mixed colloids as color filters for display devices.

Book Synopsis Surface Patterning with Colloidal Monolayers by : Nicolas Vogel

Download or read book Surface Patterning with Colloidal Monolayers written by Nicolas Vogel. This book was released on 2012-12-28. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the two dimensional crystallization of colloids be used to form highly ordered colloidal monolayers on solid substrates? What application does this have in generating arrays of nanostructures? These questions are addressed in Nicolas Vogel's thesis. Vogel describes a simple preparation method for the formation of uniform colloidal crystals over large areas, which he refines to yield more complex binary and non-close-packed arrangements. These monolayers can be applied to a process termed colloidal lithography which is used to prepare high quality metallic nanostructures with tailored properties defined to suit a variety of applications. Moreover, the author describes a method used to create metallic nanodot arrays with a resolution unprecedented for colloidal lithography methods. The author also outlines methodology to embed nanoparticle arrays into the substrate, which is developed and used to design robust, re-usable biosensor platforms and nanoscale patterns of biomimetic lipid bilayer membranes. The research in this thesis has led to a large number of publications in internationally renowned journals.

Book Synopsis Updates in Advanced Lithography by : Sumio Hosaka

Download or read book Updates in Advanced Lithography written by Sumio Hosaka. This book was released on 2013-07-03. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced lithography grows up to several fields such as nano-lithography, micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and nano-phonics, etc. Nano-lithography reaches to 20 nm size in advanced electron device. Consequently, we have to study and develop true single nanometer size lithography. One of the solutions is to study a fusion of top down and bottom up technologies such as EB drawing and self-assembly with block copolymer. In MEMS and nano-photonics, 3 dimensional structures are needed to achieve some functions in the devices for the applications. Their formation are done by several methods such as colloid lithography, stereo-lithography, dry etching, sputtering, deposition, etc. This book covers a wide area regarding nano-lithography, nano structure and 3-dimensional structure, and introduces readers to the methods, methodology and its applications.

Book Synopsis Colloidal Self-Assembly by : Junpei Yamanaka

Download or read book Colloidal Self-Assembly written by Junpei Yamanaka. This book was released on 2023-11-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise book covers fundamental principles of colloidal self-assembly and overviews of basic and applied research in this field, with abundant illustrations and photographs. Experimental and computer simulation methods to study the colloidal self-assembly are demonstrated. Complementary videos "Visual Guide to Study Colloidal Self-Assembly" on the research procedures and assembly processes are available via SpringerLink to support learning. The book explains basic elements of mechanics and electromagnetism required to study the colloidal self-assembly, so that graduate students of chemistry and engineering courses can learn the contents on their own. It reviews important research topics, including the authors' works on the colloidal self-assembly of more than 30 years’ work. The principal topics include: (1) crystallization of colloidal dispersions, with the emphasis on the role of surface charges, (2) fabrication of large and high-quality colloidal crystals by applying controlled growth methods, (3) association and crystallization by depletion attraction in the presence of polymers, (4) clustering of colloidal particles, especially those in oppositely charged systems, and (5) two-dimensional colloidal crystals. Furthermore, it covers (6) applications of colloidal crystals, ranging from cosmetics to sensing materials. We also describe space experiments on colloidal self-assembly in the International Space Station. This book will interest graduate school students in colloid and polymer science, pharmaceutics, soft matter physics, material sciences, and chemical engineering courses. It will also be a useful guide for individuals in academia and industry undertaking research in this field.
