Book excerpt: Historically, space remains a relatively undertheorized concept of analysis for schooling. This study explored the often contested meanings of space in a diverse middle school in a southeastern state. Official discourses and institutional practices of schooling have been instrumental in designating spaces (e.g., the principal's office, the detention room, the school gymnasium, etc.) where students experience violence. By foregrounding school policies, everyday spatial practices of schools, and the lived experiences of students, this study documented the ways in which schools themselves naturalize violence to the detriment of students. To map these places where violence occurred, students participated in photo-elicitation, the creation of school maps, and individual interviews that highlighted the relationship between space and identity. Applying the work of Henri Lefebvre (1991), this critical ethnography of school explored how spaces "within" schools were produced within a broader political economy of violence. Through the use of seemingly objective criteria, schools separate students to contain differences encountered in middle school when students from different neighborhoods, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, and ability levels come into contact. The creation of a dual system of education in the school system, the city, the state, and the nation contributed to the production of contact zones (places where students experience conflict) and spaces of containment (places where students are separated based on differences) that shape students' identities and experiences within these spaces.
