American author of the classic Moby Dick, Herman Melville (1819-1891), England's "finest foreign ambassador of the English novel", Polish born, Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) and E.M. Forster (1879-1970), one of the most esteemed English novelists of his time. The "connection" between these four men is their descriptions in their writings of "exotic" places - e.g. Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, Malaysia, Congo, India or "foreign" locales for their protagonists - Florence, Italy.
