Book Synopsis Intersemiotic Perspectives on Emotions by : Susan Petrilli

Download or read book Intersemiotic Perspectives on Emotions written by Susan Petrilli. This book was released on 2022-07-29. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores emotion and its translations through the global world from a variety of different perspectives, as a personal, socio- cultural, ideological, ethical and political, even business investment in the latest phases of globalisation. Emotions are powerful in engaging or disengaging individuals, communities, the masses, peoples and nations with distinct linguistic and cultural backgrounds for good, but also for evil. All depends on how emotions are interpreted, that is, translated in “words” or in “facts”, in any case in “signs”. Semiotic reflection on emotions and their interpretation/translation is thus of essential importance. An adequate understanding of emotional phenomena and their complexities calls for different views which together reveal and illustrate inconsistencies in our modern life. The contributors argue that an investigation of types of emotional translation – linguistic and non- linguistic, audio-visual, theatrical, literary, racial, legal, architectural, political, and so forth – can contribute to a better understanding of emotions and how they are exploited to engender injustice, unfairness, absurdity in contemporary life. Nonetheless, emotions are also exploited and oriented – and this is the intent of our authors – to favour the development of sustainable multicultural societies and facilitate living together. A major reference for students and scholars in translation, semiotics, language and cultural studies around the world.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Translatability of Emotions by : Susan Petrilli

Download or read book Exploring the Translatability of Emotions written by Susan Petrilli. This book was released on 2022-03-09. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth, cross-cultural and transdisciplinary discussion of the translatability of social emotions. The contributors are leading philosophers, semioticians, anthropologists, communication and translation theorists from Europe, America and Australia. Part I explores the translatability of emotions as a culturally embedded social behaviour that requires a contextualized interpretation of their origins and development in different social and cultural settings. These studies make useful preparations for the studies introduced in Part II that continue investigating the cultural and sociological influence of the development of social emotions with a special focus on the dialogical relation to the body and to others. Part III presses on delving into specific types of emotions which underscore social interactions at both the community and individual levels, such as dignity, (im-)politeness, self-regard and self-esteem. Finally, Part IV offers a further development on the preceding parts as it discusses problems of translation, expressibility and mass-medial communication of emotions. This book will engage translation scholars as well as those with a broader interest in the study and interpretation of emotions from different fields, perspectives and disciplines.

Book Synopsis Emotions in Crosslinguistic Perspective by : Jean Harkins

Download or read book Emotions in Crosslinguistic Perspective written by Jean Harkins. This book was released on 2010-12-14. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to enrich the current interdisciplinary theoretical discussion of human emo-tions by presenting studies based on extensive linguistic data from a wide range of languages of the world. Each language-specific study gives detailed semantic descriptions of the meanings of culturally salient emotion words and expressions, offering fascinating insights into people's emotional lives in diverse cultures including Amharic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Lao, Malay, Mbula, Polish and Russian. The book is unique in its emphasis on empirical language data, analyzed in a framework free of ethnocentrism and not dependent upon English emotion terms, but relying instead on independently established conceptual universals. Students of languages and cultures, psychology and cognition will find this volume a rich resource of description and analysis of emotional meanings in cultural context.

Book Synopsis Music, Dance and Translation by : Helen Julia Minors

Download or read book Music, Dance and Translation written by Helen Julia Minors. This book was released on 2023-10-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is music affected by its translation, interpretation and adaptation with, through, and by dance? How might notation of dance and music act as a form of translation? How does music influence the creation of dance? How might dance and music be understood to exchange and transfer their content, sense and process during both the creative process and the interpretative process? Bringing together chapters that explore theory and practice, this book questions the process and role translation has to play in the context of music and dance. It provides a range of case studies across this interdisciplinary field, and is not restricted by genre, style or cultural location. As one of very few volumes to explore translation in relation to music and to overtly tackle this topic in terms of dance, it moves the argument from a broad notion of text and translation, to think critically about the sound and movement arts of music and dance, using translation as a model to better understand the collaboration of these art forms.
