Book excerpt: As the name implies, the Senior Reserves were made up of older men and men who were unfit to serve in the regular army. Unlike the militia and "home guards" however, these men were in actual Confederate Service acting primarily as provost guards, railroad guards and operators, and pickets at bridges and forts. The 5th regiment was formed by the consolidation of Stowe's Infantry Battalion, Senior Reserves with another battalions in the summer of 1864. It was also known as the 74th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee, 26 April 1865. Companies of the North Carolina 5th Infantry Regiment Senior Reserves. Most of the companies served as prison guards at Salisbury, North Carolina, but Company F served as a mounted patrol guard for the Northwestern North Carolina counties. Company A - Wilkes County Company B - Ashe County and Alleghany County Company C - Surry County Company D - Alexander County and Caldwell County Company E - in the eight counties of the 8th Congressional District; Rowan County, Mecklenburg County, Union County, Catawba County, Gaston County, Cleveland County, and Lincoln County Company F - the ten counties of thre 9th Congressional District; Ashe County, Alleghany County, Surry County, Wilkes County, Yadkin County, Burke County, Caldwell County, Alexander County, Iredell County, and Davie County Company G - the fifteen counties of the 10th Congressional District; Rutherford County, Henderson County, McDowell County, Buncombe County, Watauga County, Mitchell County, Yancey County, Madison County, Haywood County, Transylvania County, Jackson County, Macon County, Clay County, and Cherokee County. Company H - Yadkin County Company I - Burke County and Caldwell County Company K - Wilkes County

It surrendered as part of the Army of TN at Durham Station, Orange Co, NC April 26, 1865. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 5th Infantry Regiment State Troops was organized at Halifax, North Carolina, in June and July 1861 with 12 companies A to M. Its companies were recruited in the counties of Cumberland, Gates, Johnston, Graven, Rowan, Betie, Wilson and Caswell.Of the 118 men of company "H" that left home in 1861 only 2 were left to surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in April of 1865. They truly earned the nickname "The Bloody Fifth."The North Carolina 5th was brigaded with the 12th, 20th, and 23rd North Carolina Regiments throughout the war. They served under 3 different Brigadier Generals however, Garland, Iverson, and finally Robert D. Johnston. Gen. Early was their Division Commander throughout the war after First Manassas when they fought under Gen. Book excerpt: The North Carolina 15th Infantry Regimennt was organized as the 5th Infantry Regiment Volunteers and mustered into Confederate service for 12 months at Garysburg, Northampton County, on 11 June 1861. It was re-designated as the 15th Infantry Regiment on 14 November 1861 and reorganized on 2 May 1862. Companies L and M became 2nd Companies K and I, 32nd Infantry Regiment on 4 July 1862. 1st Company D was traded for Company B, 49th Infantry Regiment, on 9 January 1863. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
