Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource for new and veteran researchers in the field of self-assembling and functional materials In Functional Materials from Colloidal Self-assembly, a pair of distinguished researchers delivers a thorough overview of how the colloidal self-assembly approach can enable the design and fabrication of several functional materials and devices. Among other topics, the book explores the foundations of self-assembly in different systems, nucleation, the growth of nanoparticles, self-assembly of colloidal microspheres for photonic crystals and devices, and the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules as a template for mesoporous materials. The authors also discuss the self-assembly of biomolecules, superstructures from self-assembly, architectures from self-assembly, and the applications of self-assembled nanostructures. Functional Materials from Colloidal Self-assembly provides a balanced approach to the theoretical background and applications of the subject, offering sound guidance to both experienced and early-career researchers. The book also delivers: A thorough introduction to the fundamentals of colloids, including the theory of nucleation and the growth of colloidal particles Comprehensive explorations of mechanisms and strategies for the self-assembly of colloidal particles, including DNA-mediated colloidal self-assembly Practical discussions of characterization techniques for self-assembled colloidal structures, including electron microscopy techniques and X-ray techniques In-depth examinations of biological and biomedical materials, including tissue engineering, drug loading and release, and biodetection Perfect for materials scientists, inorganic chemists, and catalytic chemists, Functional Materials from Colloidal Self-assembly is also a must-read reference for biochemists and surface chemists seeking a one-stop resource on self-assembling and functional materials.

Book Synopsis Self-Assembly of Nano- and Micro-structured Materials Using Colloidal Engineering by : Dwaipayan Chakrabarti

Download or read book Self-Assembly of Nano- and Micro-structured Materials Using Colloidal Engineering written by Dwaipayan Chakrabarti. This book was released on 2019-04-25. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembly of Nano- and Micro-structured Materials Using Colloidal Engineering, Volume 12, covers the recent breakthroughs in the design and manufacture of functional colloids at the micro- and nanoscale level. In addition, it provides analyses on how these functionalities can be exploited to develop self-assembly pathways towards nano- and micro-structured materials. As we seek increasingly complex functions for colloidal superstructures, in silico design will play a critical role in guiding experimental fabrication by reducing the element of trial-and-error that would otherwise be involved. In addition to novel experimental approaches, recent developments in computational modelling are also presented, along with an overview of the arsenal of designing tools that are available to the modern materials scientist. Focuses on promoting feedback between experiment, theory and computation in this cross-disciplinary research area Shows how colloid science plays a crucial role in the bottom-up fabrication of nanostructured materials Presents recent developments in computational modelling

Book excerpt: The frontier for light-matter interactions in materials organized at the mesoscale holds promise to realize exciting applications in solid state lighting, solar energy conversion, thermal photovoltaics and subwavelength imaging, to name a few. Colloidal self-assembly provides a low cost, large area approach to the fabrication of templates for structuring functional materials chemistries through atomic layer deposition, chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition. However, the commonly available spherical building blocks lead to high symmetry periodic dielectric materials with weak light control that have limited impact in photonics. Increasing focus on atypical colloidal structures is uncovering novel partial order mesophases (i.e., degenerate crystals, plastic crystals), quasicrystals, Archemedean tilings and superlattices with dramatic effects on dispersion relations. More generally, the desire for complex function from simple building blocks has ignited experimental efforts using supramolecular chemistry (i.e., specific interactions and directional bonding analogs) to diversify structure. Our work focuses on the colloidal analog to the rich phase space mapped by molecular solids. Through experiments and complementary modelling we advance synthesis and processing science to control phase behavior and dynamics through particle architecture, quiescent confinement and shear flows.
