Book excerpt: This provocative study was developed to uncover the thought processes of the best-selling authors from 1850 to 1920 concerning the subject of success. Based on the conviction that the reading of novels strongly influences social values and behavioral expectations, a number of key discoveries are presented regarding character behavior and gender, the variations between the work of female and male writers, the similarity of social values employed by widely diverse novelists, and the emergence of three distinct time periods related to alterations in gender expectations. The book points out the basic assumptions held by popular novelists, notes the parameters of human conduct approved by them for their characters, and identifies the ideas seen by them as necessary to their work. Kelley contends that the coherent pattern of social values uncovered through the use of content analysis suggests that the first mass audience, that is, the purchasers of best-sellers, demanded a consensus of ideas in any works that were to sell well, and that these can be seen as models for the multitudes.

Just as the newly-minted paper money was struggling to express its value, so do Austen’s minor female characters struggle to assert their intrinsic value within a marketplace that expresses their worth as bearers of dowries. Austen’s minor female characters expose the plight of women who settle for transactional marriages, become speculators and predators, or become superfluous women who have left the marriage market and battle for personal significance and existence. These characters illustrate the ambiguity of value within the marriage market economy, exposing women’s limited choices. This book employs a socio-historical framework, considering the rise of a competitive consumer economy juxtaposed with affective individualism.

Myth finds expression through various forms of art. Literature is one such form that makes us see beyond obvious and what the front door shows. It takes man to discover, inquire and construct new knowledge. Literature is a means to leap into the past through myth, history and legends. Literature, especially drama is such a form of art that reflects and expresses the inner sections of human mind in a better way. It depicts man, family, community, nation and world with all the possible tinges of truth. It not only affirms faith but can challenge long-held beliefs as well. It has been a strong medium to convey deeper meanings of life in its true and vivid colours.
