Book Synopsis Dynamic Consultations with Psychiatrists by : Jason Maratos

Download or read book Dynamic Consultations with Psychiatrists written by Jason Maratos. This book was released on 2022-07-05. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique resource detailing the day-to-day activity of doctors who work on “the coal face” of psychiatry in an acute setting Dynamic Consultations With Psychiatrists is the outcome of a collaboration between the psychiatrists of a certain hospital and the author, which has continued successfully for more than ten years, containing a number of patient consultations and cases where psychiatry was used successfully to solve a patient’s problem. The presentation of each case, and particularly of the consultation, is meant to demonstrate the process by which insights were gained. Each consultation is written in plain English with the deliberate avoidance of terminology and especially psychoanalytic jargon. Naturally, all identified features of the patients have been deleted or changed so that the patients’ privacy is not compromised. The format is near to a transcript so that the work demonstrates how the understanding evolves and emerges from the process. The structure of the book is not according to a diagnosis but according to “presenting problem” (in other words, the most prominent feature), allowing for easy and efficient accessibility. Sample concepts and learning resources covered and included in Dynamic Consultations With Psychiatrists are as follows: How a doctor is faced with a patient who is suffering in their own particular way and how the clinician gets to develop a deeper understanding of their predicament Difficulties the “coal face” doctors encounter and the challenges they will face in their personal emotional wellbeing Relationships with the other professionals both within their hospital and other agencies Curtailed histories so that there is a seamless exposition of how the conclusions of the consultation have been reached Psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and students/instructors in related programs of study can use Dynamic Consultations With Psychiatrists to gain valuable insight into the thought process of practicing psychiatrists in relation to a myriad of patient problems, allowing them to learn vicariously and become better at dealing with their own patients’ problems.

Book Synopsis The Psychiatric Consult by : Alyson Gorun

Download or read book The Psychiatric Consult written by Alyson Gorun. This book was released on 2022-05-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book guides psychiatry trainees through some of the most common psychiatric consultation requests in the general medical hospital, using accessible, case-based narratives. Clinical case scenarios are used to demonstrate how to consider both medical and psychological factors involved in the consultation, and the approach to challenging interpersonal dynamics that may occur between the hospitalized patient and the primary medical team. Each case illustrates how to begin to think like a consultation-liaison psychiatrist in order to arrive at a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan in complex clinical situations. Cases unfold in real time to highlight the critical role of the psychiatrist as liaison to the patient and medical team in order to guide psychiatric management and facilitate effective communication and treatment in the hospital. In addition to clinical cases, each chapter features a concise list of strategies to identify and address patient symptoms and behaviors, interpersonal dynamics, and barriers to care that arise in the hospital. The Psychiatric Consult features resident-specific recommendations and a case-based format that make it a unique, realistic, and engaging learning tool.

Book excerpt: Today's rapidly changing mental health care environment has created both complex challenges and unique opportunities for the community psychiatrist. Practicing Psychiatry in the Community: A Manual is an indispensable resource for practitioners and psychiatric residents. Clinically active psychiatrists will find this manual invaluable as they adopt new roles in this dynamic and exciting field. This comprehensive work by leading experts in the field addresses the major issues currently facing community psychiatrists. It even includes a user-friendly guide to the development of a research program in a community setting. Organized into three main sections, this manual provides essential information on treatment settings, target populations, and special topics in the community psychiatry domain. The Treatment Continuum explores the varied environments in which community psychiatric services may be offered, including outpatient treatment, crisis resolution services, and psychiatric rehabilitation programs. Populations such as mentally disordered children, adolescents, and the elderly; HIV-infected patients; the homeless mentally ill; the developmentally disabled; chemically dependent patients; dually diagnosed patients; violent patients; and the chronically mentally ill have unique needs requiring skilled clinical care. The Target Populations section provides the community psychiatrist with useful and practical guidelines for the treatment of each of these patient groups. The Special Topics section ushers the community psychiatrist into the era of contemporary community psychiatric practice with vital information on emerging issues like cultural diversity, the principles of effective collaboration with advocacy and family/self-help groups, the role of the multidisciplinary team, and legal and training issues.
