Book Synopsis The English Rural Community by : Brian Short

Download or read book The English Rural Community written by Brian Short. This book was released on 1992-06-04. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the English rural community, past and present, in its variety and dynamism. The distinguished team of contributors brings a variety of disciplinary perspectives to bear upon the central issues of movement and migration; the farm family and rural labour force; the development of contrasting rural communities; the portrayal of rural labour in both 'high' and popular culture; the changing nature of religious practice in the English countryside; the rural/urban fringe, and the spread of notions of a rural English arcadia within a predominantly urban society. Fully illustrated with accompanying maps, paintings and photographs, The English Rural Community provides an important and innovative overview of a subject where history, myth and debate are inseparably entwined. A full bibliography will assist a broad range of general readers and students of social history, historical geography and development studies approaching the subject for the first time, and the whole should establish itself as the central analytical account in an area where image and reality are notoriously hard to unravel.

Book Synopsis English as a Language of Teaching and Learning for Community Secondary Schools in Tanzania by : Elia Shabani Mligo

Download or read book English as a Language of Teaching and Learning for Community Secondary Schools in Tanzania written by Elia Shabani Mligo. This book was released on 2017-08-07. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the challenges posed by English, a foreign language, as a language of teaching and learning for community secondary schools in Tanzania in terms of academic performance. The book probes the necessity for having two languages of instruction in the Tanzanian educational system. While Kiswahili, the native language, is predominantly understood by the majority of people, the discussion in this book indicates that most students in community secondary schools in Tanzania are incompetent in understanding, writing, listening, reading, and speaking English, a language they use in learning and doing their examinations, especially in the early stages of their secondary studies. The incompetence in the above-mentioned skills is mostly caused by their inability to cope with the abrupt transition in the languages of instruction from their pre-primary and primary school study [Kiswahili] to secondary school study [English]. Moreover, most teachers are unable to use the English language as a means to impart knowledge or facilitate learning to their students, leading them to code-switching and code-mixing. This book poses a challenge to countries whose students pass through a transition from one language of instruction to another in their educational systems, helping them to make appropriate decisions in regard to the appropriate language of teaching and learning.

Book Synopsis The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535–1603 by : Anne Dillon

Download or read book The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535–1603 written by Anne Dillon. This book was released on 2017-03-02. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1535 and 1603, more than 200 English Catholics were executed by the State for treason. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary sources, Anne Dillon examines the ways in which these executions were transformed into acts of martyrdom. Utilizing the reports from the gallows, the Catholic community in England and in exile created a wide range of manuscripts and texts in which they employed the concept of martyrdom for propaganda purposes in continental Europe and for shaping Catholic identity and encouraging recusancy at home. Particularly potent was the derivation of images from these texts which provided visual means of conveying the symbol of the martyr. Through an examination of the work of Richard Verstegan and the martyr murals of the English College in Rome, the book explores the influence of these images on the Counter Reformation Church, the Jesuits, and the political intentions of English Catholics in exile and those of their hosts. The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535-1603 shows how Verstegan used the English martyrs in his Theatrum crudelitatum of 1587 to rally support from Catholics on the Continent for a Spanish invasion of England to overthrow Elizabeth I and her government. The English martyr was, Anne Dillon argues, as much a construction of international, political rhetoric as it was of English religious and political debate; an international Catholic banner around which Catholic European powers were urged to rally.

Book excerpt: This book examines from a practical perspective the increasingly significant impact of European Community law on English domestic law and procedure. It examines both the general principles of how EC law is given effect in the English courts, and also the impact that EC law has had on a numberof particular key areas of English law. The highly eminent team of contributors is drawn from members of the judiciary and leading academics and practitioners in the field. The volume will be welcomed by practitioners and scholars alike as an illuminating study of how the domestic legal communityhas responded to the challenges posed by a new legal system which seems fundamentally different in many respects from their own. From the Foreword by Lord Bingham of Cornhill, the Lord Chief Justice 'The book makes plain the pervasive influence of Community Law on broad swathes of our economic and social life. Through the medium of our national courts, Community Law has become a central feature of legal life, and it can no longer be seen (as perhaps it once was) as an arcane study pursued by ahandful of eccentric lawyers with a taste for the occult This is a very interesting book, and a very timely one. The editors are to be congratulated on assembling an outstanding team of judges, practitioners and academics to address these important, topical and challenging issues.'
