Book Synopsis Clients and Constituents by : Jennifer Bussell

Download or read book Clients and Constituents written by Jennifer Bussell. This book was released on 2019-05-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of distributive politics often emphasize partisanship and clientelism. However, as Jennifer Bussell demonstrates in Clients and Constituents, legislators in "patronage democracies" also provide substantial constituency service: non-contingent, direct assistance to individual citizens. Bussell shows how the uneven character of access to services at the local level-often due to biased allocation on the part of local intermediaries-generates demand for help from higher-level officials. The nature of these appeals in turn provides incentives for politicians to help their constituents obtain public benefits. Drawing on a new cross-national dataset and extensive evidence from India-including sustained qualitative shadowing of politicians, novel elite and citizen surveys, and an experimental audit study with a near census of Indian state and national legislators-this book provides a theoretical and empirical examination of political responsiveness in developing countries. It highlights the potential for an under-appreciated form of democratic accountability, one that is however rooted in the character of patronage-based politics.

Book Synopsis From the Ground Up by : Carol A. Chetkovich

Download or read book From the Ground Up written by Carol A. Chetkovich. This book was released on 2006. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Grassroots social-change organizations are a critical resource for progressive movement-building in the United States. They provide political education and sites for constituent engagement, and they are beginning to create networks across issues and/or communities; they promote home-grown leadership among groups that have been disadvantaged; they contribute to a shared understanding of the problems of inequality and injustice; and they offer a public space for the dialogue needed to identify common principles."--From the Ground Up From community organizing for affordable housing in neglected neighborhoods to providing antiviolence training for youth or litigating for the rights of sex workers, grassroots organizations are engaged in energetic efforts to increase the power of marginalized groups. Social-change organizations operate in communities all over the United States, but little has been written about the details of their operations. From the Ground Up takes a close look at how social-change organizations address challenges related to leadership, staff development, decision-making, resource needs, and collaborations. Carol Chetkovich and Frances Kunreuther, both experienced nonprofit managers, draw on their in-depth interviews with leaders and staff members from sixteen diverse social-change organizations to provide a detailed analysis of these groups and their activities. They note that even working in isolation, these organizations make important contributions to justice in their communities; together they might form the base of a larger progressive movement for change.

Book excerpt: In a writing style that is suitable for both the graduate and undergraduate student as well as professional scholar in the fields of public administration, political science and organization theory, the author looks at the rise of public bureaucracy in government. He contends that the concept of citizenship (which he defines as the interaction between a person and his/her government) is most significantly experienced by people as bureaucratic constituents, clients and victims. This hypothesis is tested by applications to the areas of political economy, social welfare and defense. Originally published by Winthrop Publishers in 1977.
