Book Synopsis Jesus, Paul, and the Law by : James D. G. Dunn

Download or read book Jesus, Paul, and the Law written by James D. G. Dunn. This book was released on 1990-01-01. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon ten years of research experience, the master scholar James D. G. Dunn presents a book on a major issue in the study of Christian origins: what were the attitudes toward Jewish law within earliest Christianity? This volume not only gathers the author's significant contributions to date but also includes new material. Divided into nine parts, it is set in the wider context of a living dialogue and debate. The introduction maps out Dunn's extensive work in Pauline and Markan studies. The final chapter, "The Theology of Galatians," serves as a summary of Dunn's current position on Paul and the law and brings the volume to a convincing conclusion.

Book excerpt: The first five books of the Old Testament were written centuries before the birth of Jesus. Yet they intricately involve him. Here Vern S. Poythress explores Genesis through Deuteronomy, demonstrating how the sacrifices and traditions of the Hebrews graphically foreshadow Christ’s relationship with his people. Dr. Poythress also explains how the penalties of the law prefigure the destruction of sin and guilt through Jesus. -- Publisher's statement

Book excerpt: In this second volume, Dr. Cook provides a series of articles that are part of his morning meditations on Scripture. Meditation, in the biblical sense, is an intentional filling of the mind with divine viewpoint; specifically, God’s Word. The purpose is to saturate our thinking with Scripture so that it will permeate all aspects of our reasoning and guide us into God’s will. These articles touch on subjects such as soteriology, grace, worship, righteous living, and character studies of people such as Saul and David. The overall intent of the book is to inform and inspire believers to live righteously before God.

Book Synopsis Hebrews, Christ, and the Law by : Barry C. Joslin

Download or read book Hebrews, Christ, and the Law written by Barry C. Joslin. This book was released on 2009-02-20. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to fill a lacuna in studies of the Epistle to the Hebrews, namely, the writer's theology of the Mosaic Law, which is seen most clearly in the doctrinal center of the book, 7:1-10:18. Joslin concludes that for the writer of Hebrews the work of Christ has transformed the Law, and that this transformation involves both its fulfillment and internalization in the New Covenant; the Law has forever been affected christologically. As such, there are continuous and discontinuous aspects of the Law that turn on the hinge of Christ, the writer's chief 'hermeneutical principle'.
